Lab: MOHODescription
The Free Triiodothyronine (FT3) test is used to measure the amount of triiodothyronine (T3) hormone in the blood. T3 is one of the two major hormones produced by the thyroid gland, which plays an important role in controlling the body’s metabolism. The Free T3 test is often ordered along with other thyroid function tests, such as the TSH and Free T4 tests, to evaluate thyroid function and diagnose thyroid disorders.
The Free T3 test measures the level of unbound, or free, T3 hormone in the blood. This is different from the Total T3 test, which measures both bound and unbound T3 hormone. The Free T3 test is considered to be a more accurate indicator of thyroid function than the Total T3 test.
The Free T3 test is often ordered to:
- Evaluate thyroid function and diagnose thyroid disorders
- Monitor treatment for thyroid disorders
- Help diagnose pituitary gland disorders
- Evaluate infertility in women
The Free T3 test is a simple blood test that requires no special preparation. A healthcare provider will draw blood from a vein in the arm, and the sample will be sent to a laboratory for analysis. Results are usually available within a few days.
