Winter is cold, winter is pleasant, and winter is dry. It is the season when the skin becomes parched and desiccated, the hair becomes dry and starts falling out, and the nails turn lusterless. Here are some beauty and make-up tips to maintain your looks this cold season.
Skincare
Carry a moisturizer with you to hydrate your hands. Use an oil-based moisturizer. It supports the skin and doesn’t block natural sebum production. Avoid petroleum-based products. They coat the skin but do not moisturize it. Coconut oil, jojoba oil, and cocoa butter are good options used together or separately. Hot water is something one must avoid in winter since it takes the moisture away from the skin. Lukewarm water will not take away the moisture from your skin.
Haircare
- Use a vented brush with a mix of plastic and boar bristles to get frizz-free hair.
- Use lukewarm water and a leave-in conditioner every time you shampoo your hair.
- Hot oil with lemon applied to the scalp will prevent dandruff.
- Avoid tying hair with rubber bands to prevent split ends.
- Apply honey over the scalp and wrap a towel and wash it off after 30 minutes. This will give shine and bounce to the hair and prevent hair fall.
Nail care
Nails are formed of flat cells with keratin. Moisturizers make nails flexible, elastic, and less likely to break. Apply the cream after washing your hands every time. Massage the cream into the cuticles to help stimulate healthy nail growth. Rub olive oil on nail cuticles at night. Dip nails in lukewarm water for 5-10 minutes, apply oil, and leave it for an hour.
Lip care
- Avoid licking your lips.
- Use moisturizing lipstick in the daytime.
- Apply lip balm before you go to bed.
- Remove any unwanted dry skin from lips by exfoliating them with a toothbrush while brushing your teeth.
- Apply Vaseline to lips after this.
Hand care
The skin of the hand is delicate and dry and suffers the most in winter. The easy way to protect is by using gloves. Wear rubber gloves even while working or while doing household chores like washing dishes. Exposure to water and harsh chemicals recurrently leads to rough hands. Avoid washing hands too often. Use a natural moisturizer or apply coconut oil to your hands at night.
Foot care
Cracked heels, flaky skin, and dry feet in winter can make walking uncomfortable. Apply foot cream daily in the morning. Massage your feet at night with butter or oil before you go to bed. Cut your nails regularly to keep them clean and prevent ingrown nails in winter. Peeling of soles at least once a week by massaging with exfoliating cream and then soaking feet in warm water for 5 minutes removes dead thick skin, keeps feet clean and healthy, and increases the blood circulation. Use socks even at home. Avoid using synthetic fiber stockings in winter.
Eyecare
Use sunglasses whenever you go out in wintry winds to avoid drying of eyes. Apply a good quality eye cream around the eyes to protect the delicate eye area from the harsh winter. Clean eyes with cold water often. This is an effective way to keep them healthy and disease-free in winter. Rub your hands together and place them on your eyes. The warmth of the hand relaxes the tissues surrounding the eyes stretched due to winter.
Facial care
Choose appropriate oil for the face. Use avocado oil or almond oil. These are non-clogging. Using sunscreen in winter is important. Sunrays are equally harmful in winter. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen 15-20 minutes before going out in the sun. Avoid using astringents, alcohol-based toners, peels, and masks. They rapidly dehydrate the delicate facial skin. Try applying honey or milk cream at least twice a week. This will keep the face smooth and glowing.
Food care for beauty
- Drink adequate water in winter. Water retains moisture and prevents dehydration of the skin. Avoid caffeinated drinks. Caffeine is a diuretic and it robs your skin of moisture making it dry.
- Go easy on the salt. Appropriate salt balance is necessary to keep the body hydrated and the skin moist.
- Eat food rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, and E, which are essential for healthy skin.
