Jewelry allergy is one of the most common forms of contact allergic dermatitis. Does your bracelet leave your wrist green? Do your ear-rings make your ear lobes reddish and itchy? Then you are suffering from jewelry allergy.

Jewelry allergy is very common among people who wear artificial jewels. The culprit here is the nickel and copper present in the ornaments.

Copper allergy is mild and it is not exactly an allergic reaction. The green discoloration that you observe is the result of the oxidation process that the copper undergoes.

Allergy to nickel is usually the more severe one. One may experience itching and redness of the affected area. In extremely sensitive skin, there may be blisters too. The blisters may break to leave cuts and later scars.
The symptoms usually start after 6 to 8 hours after exposure.

Nickel allergy can be diagnosed by a dermatologist just by looking at the symptoms. In rare cases, if the symptoms are confusing he may advice you to go for a skin patch test. Various allergens are into your skin under a control. These allergens are present in tiny amounts. The area that reacts is said to be allergic to the specific allergen.

Nickel allergy lasts for a lifetime. The symptoms can be relieved and brought under control. The best solution is to avoid the use of nickel altogether. Mild symptoms can be eased with antihistamines and hydrocortisone creams that are available over the counter at drug stores. For severe symptoms it is advisable to consult a dermatologist who will prescribe a steroid.

Tips to avoid nickel allergy-

  1. If you are planning to get your ears or other body parts pierced, go for stainless steel instruments instead of gun piercing. Gun piercing may expose you to some amounts of nickel.
  2. 18 to 24 karat gold jewels and silver jewelry are safe. Avoid white gold as it may contain nickel.
  3. Go for eye-glass frames made of plastic or titanium instead of metal ones that contain nickel.
  4. Buy clothes and undergarments that have fasteners and buttons made of plastic and not of metal.
  5. Wear watch with bands made of plastic or leather instead of metal straps.
  6. If you are extremely sensitive to nickel then avoid foods like fish and chocolate as they contain nickel.
