TONSILS

Tonsils are the masses of the lymphatic material situated at the back of the throat. The loose pieces of hanging tissue located on either side of the throat. Tonsils tend to reach their largest size near puberty and they gradually undergo atrophy thereafter.

Functions:

Tonsils are part of lymphatic system and protect the body from harmful germs and contaminants. It is the first station of defence against all ingested and inhaled pollutants.

Diseases:

Tonsils can be inflamed known as tonsillitis, which is very common disorder. Tonsils can be enlarged known as hyperplasia.  Tonsils can be surgically removed in the tonsillectomy. Acute tonsillitis, recurrent tonsillitis, tonsillar hypertrophy these are the common disorders of tonsils.

Interesting Facts:

Sometimes you may feel white nasty chunks at the back of your throat, these are tonsilloliths or tonsil stones; these are just the globs of mucus, dead cells, debris and bacteria that form and appear in everyone’s tonsils.
