Caffeine is a stimulant which is found naturally in tea and coffee and added artificially in sodas, energy drinks and beverages. While most people enjoy their daily cuppa, little do they know of the dangers of overdoing the stuff.
Caffeine affects the central nervous system and like any stimulant, your daily coffee can also be highly addictive and can even cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Caffeine is in syrups, chocolate cakes and even in some over the counter medicines.
According to Roland Griffiths, professor in the departments of psychiatry and neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, “Studies have demonstrated that people who take in a minimum of 100 mg of caffeine per day (about the amount in one cup of coffee) can acquire a physical dependence that would trigger withdrawal symptoms that include headaches, muscle pain and stiffness, lethargy, nausea, vomiting, depressed mood, and marked irritability”. Griffiths strongly believes that caffeine withdrawal should be classified as a psychological disorder through his research.Withdrawals occurred within 12 to 24 hours after stopping caffeine intake and could last as long as nine days.
Caffeine interferes with the body’s rest patterns and promotes alertness, which is exactly why it is the most preferred stimulant. Just like any addiction, kicking your daily dose of cky business as your body absorbs caffeine easily. But that also means that it can eliminate caffeine just as easily. The main challenge is getting the mind used to the idea of not having as much tea or coffee. Remember, even decaf (decaffeinated) coffee is not entirely caffeine free.
Effects of coffee binging
If you binge on coffee then it will certainly have rather telling effects on your body and can brew a mental disorder. So if you have over three cups daily over a long period it could over strain the nervous system and produce unpleasant symptoms such as flushed face, incoherent thoughts and irregular heartbeat.
Caffeine intoxication is a mental disorder. So if you are over indulging then maybe it is time you stop.
