PALATOPHARYNGEUS

Palatopharyngeus is located in the mouth. It extends downward on the sides and backward to the pharynx on the soft palate.

Origin

Palatine bone, palatine aponeurosis and the mucosa of the pharynx

Insertion

The pharyngeal wall, the palatopharyngeal arch and the thyroid cartilage

Blood supply

Ascending palatine artery and greater palatine artery

Nerve supply

Vagus nerve

Action

It prevents swallowed food from entering the nasopharynx.

The movement of palatopharyngeus muscle sometimes leads to snoring in some people.
