STAPEDIUS

Stapedius is located in the tympanic cavity of middle ear. It attaches to the smallest bone in human body called as ‘stapes.’

Origin

The pyramidal eminence of the tympanic cavity.

Insertion

Stapes

Blood supply

Stapedial branch of the posterior auricular artery.

Nerve supply

Facial nerve.

Action

It pulls the neck of the stapes bone when there is a loud sound, to reduce the excessive vibration and protect the inner ear.

Disease/Injury

Hyperacusis occurs when there is injury to the nerve supplying this muscle. Hyperacusis means normal sounds are perceived very loudly.
