INFERIOR PHARYNGEAL CONSTRICTORS

Constrictor of the pharynx is the thickest muscle in the neck located on the sides of cricoid and thyroid cartilage.

Origin

Thyroid and cricoid cartilage.

Insertion

Pharyngeal raphe.

Blood supply

Ascending pharyngeal artery, inferior thyroid artery.

Nerve supply

Vagus nerve.

Action

It constricts the pharynx and helps to pass the bolus of food downwards in the food pipe.

Disease/Injury

Stress, strain, inflammation or dysfunction of the muscle can hamper the swallowing action of the pharynx.
