SUPERIOR PHARYNGEAL CONSTRICTOR

Constrictor of pharynx superior is quadrilateral in shape, located in the pharynx on the top of other constrictors of pharynx. It is divided into four parts: pterygopharyngeal, buccopharyngeal, myolopharyngeal and glossopharyngeal.

Origin

Cricoid cartilage, thyroid cartilage.

Insertion

Pharyngeal raphe.

Blood supply

Ascending pharyngeal artery, inferior thyroid artery.

Nerve supply

Vagus nerve.

Action

This muscle helps to pass the bolus of food downwards in the food pipe.

Disease/Injury

Dysfunction of this muscle causes pain in face, ear, and throat.
