OMOHYOID

Omohyoid is a fairly small muscle. It is present on the anterior aspect of the neck. The omohyoid muscle acts as an anchor for the tongue.

Origin

The omohyoid arises from the scapula and the superior transverse scapular ligament.

Insertion

Hyoid bone.

Blood supply

Suprahyoid artery, infrahyoid artery, superficial cervical artery, inferior thyroid artery.

Nerve supply

Ansa cervicalis.

Action

The omohyoid depresses and stabilizes the hyoid bone.

Disease/Injury

An injured or tight omohyoid can lead to shoulder or neck pain.

Exercise

Since this muscle is located very deep into the neck, exercising it is not easy.
