Origin
The platysma arises from the subcutaneous tissue above and below the clavicle.
Insertion
The platysma inserts into the mandible and skin of the lower part of the cheek; it blends with the muscles near the angle of the mouth.
Blood supply
Facial artery, superficial cervical artery, superior thyroid artery, internal thoracic artery.
Nerve supply
Facial nerve.
Action
The muscle helps in the movement of the corner of the mouth and the lower lip to give expressions of surprise, frown, fear, etc.
Disease/Injury
Increasing age can cause a person to appear double-chinned due to the platysma muscle. Paralysis of the platysma can cause the person to have a mask-like, expressionless face.
Exercise
The chin lift exercise stretches and tones the muscles of the jaw, neck, and throat. To perform the chin lift, tilt your head towards the ceiling and pucker your lips. Hold and repeat.
Interesting facts
