STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID

The sternocleidomastoid is a cylindrical muscle located in the anterior portion of the neck. This muscle extends from the sternum to the clavicle and to the sides of the skull.

Origin

Clavicle and the manubrium of the sternum.

Insertion

Temporal bone – mastoid process and the superior nuchal line.

Blood supply

Occipital artery, superior thyroid artery.

Nerve supply

Accessory nerve, cervical plexus.

Action

The sternocleidomastoid helps to rotate the neck and in head tilting.

Disease/Injury

Torticollis or wry neck is a condition in which the head becomes fixed in a bent position towards either side.

Interesting facts

Contraction of this muscle on each side causes the face to turn to the other side.
