Origin
The frontalis muscle originates from the galea aponeurotica.
Insertion
It inserts into the skin around the nose and the eyebrows.
Blood supply
Supratrochlear artery, supraorbital artery.
Nerve supply
Facial nerve.
Action
It is a major muscle of facial expression. While looking up, the muscle raises up the eyebrows. It helps to see the things that are too distant or dim. It helps to frown the forehead to express surprise. It helps to move the eyebrows to protect the eyes from dirt, sweat, and other particles. In people with drooping eyelids, this muscle pulls the lids back up to allow them to see clearly.
Disease/Injury
With age, the frontalis muscle starts to get weaker and pull out of alignment, leading to wrinkles on forehead and drooping of the face. You feel sinus pain and migraine headache here.
Muscle Exercise
Place your index fingers on forehead just half an inch above the eyebrows. Pull the fingers downwards while raising the eyebrows up simultaneously. Hold the position for a count of 2 and then relax. Repeat the exercise 10 times. This will help to firm the frontalis muscle.
Interesting facts
Frontalis is one of the most self-massaged muscles on the human body. Massaging this muscle helps to relieve headache.
