PUBORECTALIS

Puborectalis muscle is present in the lower portion of the rectum. It is sling shaped. It is connected to the anal sphincter.

Origin

Pubic symphysis.

Insertion

After merging with several structures around the rectum and in the perineum, the fibers finally attach onto the coccyx.

Blood supply

Internal pudendal artery, internal iliac artery.

Nerve supply

Sacral nerves, levator ani nerve.

Action

It helps to control the elimination during bowel movement. It is always in contracted state. When it relaxes, it helps to ease the bowel movements.

Disease/Injury

Constipation can occur if the muscle does not relax properly.

Muscle Exercise

To treat chronic constipation, you can practice pelvic floor retraining. Coordinate the function of muscles of abdomen with the pelvic floor muscles.

Interesting facts

For easy defecation, it is better to sit in squatting position than using western toilets.
