QUADRATUS LUMBORUM

The quadratus lumborum is a lower back muscle.

Origin

Iliac crest

Insertion

12th rib, lumbar vertebrae

Blood supply

Lumbar arteries, subcostal artery, iliolumbar artery

Nerve supply

Subcostal, ilioinguinal  and iliohypogastric nerves

Action  

The muscle helps us to stand erect, to bend the trunk sideways and to stabilize the lower back.

Disease/Injury  

Dysfunction of the quadratus lumborum dysfunction can produce pain in the hip, pelvis and lower back region.

Muscle Exercise  

To stretch and strengthen, you can do exercises like standing stretch, side plank exercises. You can also perform ‘Parighasana’ to make your muscle strong.

Interesting Facts 

The quadratus lumborum is also known as the ‘hip hiker’ muscle.
