TRANSVERSOSPINALIS MULTIFIDUS

Transversospinalis multifidus muscle is located in the back on the part of vertebrae of the spine, the backbone.

Origin

Sacrum, iliac crest, posterior superior iliac spine, erector spinae aponeurosis.

Insertion

Spinous processes of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae.

Blood supply

Vertebral artery, occipital artery, posterior intercostal arteries, lateral sacral artery, lumbar arteries.

Nerve supply

Spinal nerves.

Action

It helps to bend the back backwards.

Disease/Injury

If these muscles are damaged, it leads to acute low back pain and reduces the stability of backbone.

Muscle Exercise

To strengthen this muscle, you can perform dorsal raises. Lie down on the exercise ball on your stomach. With both the hands and feet on the floor, balance yourself with the help of hip. Raise your head with upper body so that this muscle in the back gets stretched. While doing this, contract the stomach muscle. Repeat this 10 times.
