GLUTEUS MEDIUS

Gluteus medius is one of the pelvic muscles. It is fairly thick and broad.

Origin

Ilium – gluteal surface.

Insertion

Femur – greater trochanter.

Blood supply

Superior gluteal artery.

Nerve supply

Superior gluteal nerve.

Action

The gluteus medius helps in abduction of the thigh and rotation of the leg. It also supports the legs in carrying body weight.

Injury

The gluteus medius may get injured during sports or trauma from fall. Also, there may be post-injection soreness.

Muscle exercise

Lunges, squats, and straight leg raises help to tone the gluteus medius.

Interesting facts

Practicing the frog kick stroke while swimming helps to tone the gluteus medius muscle.
