QUADRATUS FEMORIS

Quadratus femoris is a flat, quadrangular shaped muscle located behind the hip joint.

Origin

Ischial tuberosity.

Insertion

Femur – intertrochanteric crest.

Blood supply

Inferior gluteal artery.

Nerve supply

L4, L5, S1 nerves.

Action

It helps to rotate the thigh externally and also move the thigh inwards. It helps to stabilize the head of femur bone.

Disease/Injury

Hip pain is mostly seen in athletes.

Muscle Exercise

To strengthen the quadratus femoris, you can do straight knee raise exercise. Lift one leg towards the chest, hold for 2 to 3 seconds and then lower the leg. Repeat the same with the other leg. Do 10 repetitions for each leg.
