ABDUCTOR HALLUCIS

Abductor hallucis is a foot muscle located on the inner side of foot. It extends from below the big toe to inner side of heel below the ankle bone.

Origin

Calcaneal tuberosity.

Insertion

First phalanx of the great toe.

Blood supply

Median artery.

Nerve supply

Median nerve.

Action

It helps to bend (flex) the great toe, move the great toe to inner side (abduct), and supports the inner side of foot.

Disease/Injury

Abductor hallucis can be strained due to excessive overload or activity and may cause pain along the inner side of the foot.

Muscle Exercise

Abductor hallucis can be stretched by doing manual toe flexing. Be relaxed in a comfortable position with knees bent, grab the toes and pull them towards face; ankle should not move, let the only hinging point be below the toes and gently hold it more firmly.

Interesting facts

In athletes, this muscle is mostly strained and the arch of foot gets reduced, causing flat foot and pain.
