PSOAS MAJOR

Psoas major is a part of the iliopsoas muscle and is located on the outer surface of the pelvic bone on the lumbar region of the vertebral column.

Origin

Vertebrae T12-L5.

Insertion

Femur – lesser trochanter.

Blood supply

Iliolumbar artery.

Nerve supply

L1, L2, L3 nerves.

Action

Psoas major muscle provides strength and flexibility to hip joint and helps to turn around and rotate. It also helps to bend the upper body forward and backward.

Disease/Injury

When psoas major muscle gets injured, the person experiences lower back pain. You may also feel pain while sitting and standing or while moving leg forward.

Muscle Exercise

To strengthen psoas major muscle, you can perform leg raises. Lie on your back and raise your right leg up until it is at 90 degrees to your trunk. Hold and bring it down slowly, but do not touch the floor. A few inches above the floor, raise the leg again. Do 15 repetitions and repeat the same with the other leg.
