PSOAS MINOR

Psoas minor is a long, thin muscle and is located in front of psoas major muscle on the outer surface of the pelvic bone in the lumbar region of vertebral column.

Origin

T12, L1 vertebrae.

Insertion

Pelvic bone – pectineal line, iliopectineal eminence.

Blood supply

Lumbar arteries, iliolumbar artery.

Nerve supply

L1 nerve.

Action

It is a weak muscle and helps to bend the lower back. It plays very little role in moving the hips.

Disease/Injury

Psoas minor muscle strain is common in athletes and sportsmen. It gives rise to difficulty in running and jumping.

Muscle Exercise

To strengthen psoas minor muscle you can perform leg raises. Lie on your back and raise your right leg up until it is at 90 degrees to your trunk. Hold and bring it down slowly, but do not touch the floor. A few inches above the floor, raise the leg again. Do 15 repetitions and repeat the same with the other leg.

Interesting facts

This muscle is not present in almost 40-50 % of human beings.
