EXTENSOR HALLUCIS LONGUS

Extensor hallucis longus is a thin foot muscle.

Origin

Fibula bone, interosseous membrane.

Insertion

Distal phalanx of the great toe.

Blood supply

Anterior tibial artery.

Nerve supply

Deep fibular nerve.

Action

It helps to move the foot inwards and outwards, move the great toe upwards, and bend the foot upwards.

Disease/Injury

Overuse of the muscle may cause strain and inflammation.

Muscle Exercise

Toe raises or foot raises should be done to strengthen this muscle.

Interesting fact

While climbing up the stairs, it helps to pull the big toe up to clear the step.
