FIBULARIS LONGUS

Fibularis longus is the longest and most superficial muscle of lower leg located on the outer side of the leg. It is also known as peroneus longus.

Origin

Fibula

Insertion

1st metatarsal bone, medial cuneiform bone.

Blood supply

Fibular artery.

Nerve supply

Superficial fibular nerve.

Action

It helps to move the foot downwards and move the foot outwards at the ankle.

Disease/Injury

Peroneal tendonitis may be caused in which there is pain and swelling at the outside of foot and ankle. Also, there is pain in the peroneus muscle on stretching. This is mostly seen in sports like basketball and gymnastics where there is frequent bending of the foot.

Muscle Exercise

The stretching exercise includes moving the ankle inwards and outward to strengthen the muscle.

Interesting fact

The fibularis longus helps you to stand on one leg.
