FLEXOR DIGITORUM LONGUS

Flexor digitorum longus is the long narrow muscle located in the back side of lower leg.

Origin

Tibia

Insertion

Distal phalanges of 2nd to 5th toes.

Blood supply

Posterior tibial artery.

Nerve supply

Tibial nerve.

Action

It mainly helps to bend the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th toes downward. It also helps to move the foot downwards.

Disease/Injury

Overuse of flexor muscles may cause flexor tendonitis, which leads to pain.

Muscle Exercise

To strengthen your flexor digitorum muscle, you need to do barefoot walking and running, towel bunching, and seated calf raises.

Interesting facts

This muscle helps the toes to ‘grip’ and mould to the surface, which is very important to maintain balance on rough surfaces.
