FLEXOR HALLUCIS LONGUS

Flexor hallucis longus is the deep muscle located in the back side of lower leg.

Origin

Fibula

Insertion

Distal phalanx of the great toe.

Blood supply

Peroneal artery.

Nerve supply

Tibial nerve.

Action

It mainly helps to bend (flex) the great toe. It helps to move the foot and toes downwards.

Disease/Injury

Overuse or improper use of fins during swimming can injure this muscle and can cause tendinitis, as it is used in pointing the toes straight while swimming.

Muscle Exercise

Place your foot on the edge of desk or table and slowly bend the foot away from the body. Hold the position for 5 seconds and then move the toes towards the body, stretch, and hold the position for some time. Repeat each stretch 10 times.

Interesting facts

It is mostly used in ballet dancing, so the injury to this muscle is also called as dancing tendonitis.
