PLANTARIS

Plantaris muscle is a thin long tendon located in the calf region of the back of the leg.

Origin

Femur – lateral supracondylar ridge.

Insertion

Inserts into the Achilles tendon.

Blood supply

Sural arteries.

Nerve supply

Tibial nerve.

Action

Plantaris muscle helps in flexing the knee joint and carrying out plantar flexion at the ankle joint.

Disease/Injury

Tennis leg is the most painful injury to the plantaris muscle. It may happen while jumping or running or when the leg is in extended position. You can relieve this pain with RICE protocol; that, is rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

Muscle Exercise

Stand 3 feet far from the wall with knees bent, feet flat, and hands touching the wall. You will feel stretch in the back of your leg and feet.
