POPLITEUS MUSCLE

Popliteus is a thin, flat, triangular muscle in the posterior aspect (back) of the knee.

Origin

Femur – lateral condyle, lateral meniscus.

Insertion

Tibia

Blood supply

Popliteal artery.

Nerve supply

Tibial nerve.

Action

It helps to bend the knee and rotate the leg. While walking, the unlocking of the knee is done by the popliteus muscle.

Disease/Injury

Falling on an extended knee can cause injury to the popliteus muscle.

Muscle Exercise

Do wall squats to stretch your knee before any strenuous physical activity. Tight knees put you at a higher risk of injury.

Interesting facts

The popliteus muscle is also called as ‘key muscle’ of popliteal region.
