BICEPS FEMORIS

BICEPS FEMORIS

Biceps femoris is one of the hamstring muscles. It is located on the posterior aspect of the thigh.

Origin

Long head – ischial tuberosity, sacrotuberous ligament.

Short head – femur, lateral intermuscular septum.

Insertion

Primarily inserted onto the head of the fibula, some portion into the tibia – lateral condyle.

Blood supply

Inferior gluteal artery, popliteal artery, perforating arteries.

Nerve supply

Long head – tibial nerve.

Short head – common fibular nerve.

Action

It helps to extend the thigh at the hip and also helps to bend the leg at the knee and externally rotate the leg when the knee is bending.

Disease/Injury

Runners may feel sharp knee pain while running if their biceps femoris is weak.

Muscle Exercise

To prevent the muscle from injury and strengthen the muscle, perform the exercises like squats, leg lift, leg curl, standing hamstring stretch, and sitting hamstring stretch.

Interesting fact

Do not overexert this muscle by exercise. If you feel pain, discontinue the exercise and take at least 24 hours of rest.
