Origin
The rectus femoris originates from the ilium. The vastus lateralis/medialis/intermedius originate from the femur.
Insertion
Common insertion of all 4 muscles on the tibial tuberosity of the tibia.
Blood supply
Femoral artery.
Nerve supply
Femoral nerve.
Action
All the four quadriceps muscles help to extend the knee joint. This muscle is used in walking and running. Jumping and squatting also necessitates the use of this muscle.
Disease/Injury
Quadriceps femoris muscle strain produces pain, swelling, and weakness in leg. To treat this, you need to use the RICE protocol of Rest, Ice application, Compression and Elevation.

Exercises like leg extensions, leg press, lunges and step-ups, dumbbell squats helps to strengthen the quadriceps femoris muscle.
