VASTUS INTERMEDIUS

Vastus intermedius is a thigh muscle and is one of the four quadriceps muscle. It is located on the front side of thigh.

Origin

Femur

Insertion

Combines with the vastus lateralis/medialis/intermedius muscles to form the quadriceps tendon that inserts into the base of the patella.

Blood supply

Femoral artery.

Nerve supply

Femoral nerve.

Action

It helps to bend and extend the knee joint with other joint muscles.

Disease/Injury

Excessive kicking, jumping, sprinting and hopping puts pressure on the muscle and causes muscle strain due to which there is excessive sharp pain in thigh at the time of injury.

Muscle Exercise

Exercises that move whole lower body helps work on vastus intermedius, like dumbbell squats, front and back lunges.

Interesting facts

Biking is a good way to strengthen vastus intermedius.
