INFRASPINATUS

The infraspinatus muscle forms a part of the rotator cuff. It is present on the posterior aspect of the shoulder.

Origin

Scapula – infraspinous fossa.

Insertion

Humerus – greater tubercle.

Blood supply

Suprascapular artery, circumflex scapular artery.

Nerve supply

Suprascapular nerve.

Action

It externally rotates the arm and stabilizes the shoulder joint.

Disease/Injury

Excessive computer work or car driving can strain this muscle giving rise to pain.

Muscle Exercise

Frequent driving or long hours at the computer must be interspersed with simple shoulder rotations and forward/backward movements in order to avoid strain of the shoulder muscles.
