SUPRASPINATUS

The supraspinatus muscle is a shoulder muscle that form part of the rotator cuff.

Origin

Scapula – supraspinous fossa.

Insertion

Humerus – greater tubercle.

Blood supply

Suprascapular artery.

Nerve supply

Suprascapular nerve.

Action

It helps to control movement of the shoulder and upper arm.

Disease/Injury

Throwing sports such as tennis or volleyball and falls onto the shoulder can lead to injury of the supraspinatus.

Muscle Exercise

Lateral raises help to strengthen the supraspinatus muscle.
