Causes and risk factors
Wrinkles are formed as a part of process of ageing. With ageing, the cells divide more slowly causing the inner layer of skin i.e. dermis to thin. This leads to loss of strength and texture of skin. Also with advancing age, skin’s ability to hold moisture, produce sebum is lost causing wrinkles. Sun exposure, pollutants, smoking, repeated facial expressions are other contributing factors.
Clinical presentation
Wrinkles are creases on the skin of uncovered areas of body. They are folds and lines of loosened skin. Wrinkles are prominently seen on face especially forehead, around eyes, around lips, sides of nose, neck, back of palms, forearms. Some wrinkles can become deep furrows and can be easily noticed around eyes, nose and mouth.
Investigation
Medical history by the patient and Clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis.
Treatment
No treatment is required for wrinkles. For cosmetic purposes treatment involves use of topical retinoids, anti ageing creams. Surgical treatments involve laser, light source, radiofrequency treatment; chemical peel, dermabrasion, soft tissue fillers, Botox treatment, face lift and skin tightening will also help in treating wrinkles.
