Causes and risk factors
Normally on consuming alcohol it is broken down into acetic acid by Aldehyde Dehydrogenase (ALDH).ALDH is an enzyme released by liver. However in some people due to unavailability of the ALDH the alcohol is not broken down and can remain in the blood as a toxic substance. As a result of this an adverse immune reaction is triggered leading to a variety of symptoms.
Clinical presentation:
A person who has intolerance to alcohol can present with complaints of red eruptions (Urticaria) and itching of the body. Other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, pain in abdomen, bloated feeling in abdomen and change in bowel movements like diarrhea or constipation can occur. Coryza, headache and low blood pressure, flushes of heat are other symptoms seen. Although rare in severe cases it can lead to anaphylaxis.
Investigations:
Usually the patient himself overtime can identify the intolerance .Diagnosis can be done on the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patients and the physical examination carried out by the doctor. The detail history taken from the patient will help the doctor to evaluate. Routine blood test and allergy test can be recommended by the consultant which will confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment:
As per doctors advice alcohol and alcohol beverages should be avoided. For relieving the discomfort anti allergic medications are advised. Anti histamines and steroids have found to be effective. In cases of anaphylaxis hospitalization and close monitoring is required.
Other modes of treatment:
Certain other modes of treatment can also be helpful in coping up the symptom. Taking into consideration the symptoms in holistic way, homoeopathy can offer a good aid for the relief of the symptoms. The Ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbs and synthetic derivates can also be beneficial in combating the complaints.
