Causes and risk factors
Anodontia vera is a congenital disorder. It is caused due to some genetic mutation; however, the specific gene involved is not known. This condition is commonly associated with ectodermal dysplasia. Ectodermal dysplasia is said to be caused due to mutation in genes. The genes responsible for this condition are EDS and EDAR and EDARDD.
Clinical presentation:
This condition can affect the primary teeth or even the permanent ones, but more commonly the permanent ones are affected. There is either complete absence of all teeth or some teeth. Along with absence of teeth, alveolar bone hypertrophy can also be seen.
Investigations:
Clinical examination carried out by the dentist is usually sufficient to diagnose the case; however, along with this an oral x-ray can also be advised.
Treatment:
The absence of natural teeth is replaced by the artificial ones. Dentures are fixed or dental implantation can be done. Early mandibular implant therapy can also be done.
