Causes and risk factors
Auricular hematoma is caused due to the injury or trauma to the ear, either blunt or due to friction. People who are involved in wrestling, boxing, martial arts, rugby are at increased risk of developing auricular hematoma.
Clinical presentation
The presentation is usually unilateral. The outer portion of the ear appears deformed, typically cauliflower-shaped.
Investigations
Auricular hematoma can be diagnosed on the basis of patient history and physical examination. No special investigations are needed.
Treatment
Treatment for auricular hematoma involves compression, drainage of the accumulated blood and antibiotics to prevent infection. If the deformation is already formed, cosmetic surgery is required to correct the deformity.
Complications
If auricular hematoma is left untreated, it can lead to permanent deformity of the ear known as ‘cauliflower ear.’
When to contact a doctor
Contact a doctor as soon as you develop any pain or deformity in the outer ear, especially if there is a history of injury.
Prevention
Use of appropriate protective head gear during sports can help in prevention of auricular hematoma.
Systems involved
