Campylobacter enteritis

Campylobacter enteritis is a food borne bacterial infection of the intestine caused by campylobacter bacterium. It is also known as campylobacteriosis.

Causes and risk factors

Campylobacter enteritis is caused due to infection with campylobacter bacterium, most commonly Campylobacter jejuni. The infection is acquired in the following ways – fecal-oral route, eating contaminated food, eating raw or undercooked meat, drinking contaminated water or unpasteurized milk, coming in contact with animals such as cow, chicken, cats and dogs.

Clinical presentation

The symptoms that develop after an incubation period of 2-4 days include bloody diarrhea, dysentery, abdominal cramps, and abdominal pain. Accompanied symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting.

Investigation

Medical history by the patient and clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. Routine hemogram, stool culture is advised.

Treatment

Treatment involves fluid and electrolyte replacement. Medications like antidiarrheal, antibiotics, analgesics, antipyretics may be required in some cases.

Other Modes of treatment

The other modes of treatment can also be effective in treating campylobacter enteritis. Homoeopathy is a science which deals with individualization and considers a person in a holistic way.
