Causes and risk factors
Charley horse is caused by heavy exercising, poor blood circulation to lower limb, and hormonal imbalance. It can be due to deficiency of potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Side effects of medication, dehydration, muscle fatigue can also cause charley horse. It is also seen in condition like pregnancy, neuropathy, or being overweight.
Clinical presentation
Patient complains of painful spasm in muscles of leg. Calf muscles may feel hard and tight. Spasm usually lasts for a few seconds. The pain is severe and may feel as a knot in the calf.
Investigation
Medical history by the patient and clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. MRI may be useful to diagnose the disease.
Treatment
During an episode of the cramp; stretching, massaging, warm fomentation of the affected area will help in reliving the cramp. Stretching exercises are helpful. Electrolyte administration contributes to the treatment.

The other modes of treatment can also be effective in treating charley horse. Homoeopathy is a science which deals with individualization and considers a person in a holistic way. This science can be helpful in combating the symptoms. Similarly, the Ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbal medicines and synthetic derivates is also found to be effective in treating charley horse.
