Causes and risk factors
Injury is the major causative factor for concussion. Fall or blow on head or vehicular accidents are , injury to head while playing sports etc can lead to concussion.
Clinical presentation
Changes are seen both at the physical and mental level. There is always a history of injury to head, following injury the patient can comes up with complaints of headache, nausea, vomiting and dizziness. There occurs disturbances in vision. The patient comes up blurred or double vision, ringing in the ear. Convulsion is seen in severe cases.
Such patients are often confused. They lack concentration and find difficulty in reasoning and carrying out the daily activity. Restlessness and dullness, lack of attention and disturbed sleep are some of the other complaints seen.
Investigations
Concussions are usually assessed on the basis of examination like Duration of unconsciousness, Post traumatic amnesia and Glasgow coma scale. The investigations which can be advised by the doctor are brain scans and electroencephalogram.
Treatment
The foremost line of treatment is to find out whether there is any emergency condition after the injury. Depending upon the severity the treatment is planned. The treatments consist of administration of pain relieving medications. In severe cases of injury surgical intervention is adopted. Avoidance of compete exertion and stress, rest, Drinking plenty of water ,avoiding alcohol and driving of a car or riding of bike for few days to months are some of the measures to be adopted after surgery. Use of protective devices while riding bike e.g.: Helmet, Use of seat belts and air bags during driving and following traffic rules.
