Causes and risk factors
Ectopic pupil consists of displacement of the pupil. Along with this, the lens is also dislocated. The dislocation is usually at the opposite side. No systemic cause exists. This condition is caused due to certain genetic abnormality.
Clinical presentation:
The characteristic feature of this condition is that the pupil is not centrally placed. The displacement is either seen superior temporal or inferior temporal. The pupil is poorly dilated. Poor vision is seen. The pupil remains excessively large even under bright light. The lens of such eyes is smaller as compared to the normal ones. Increase in the corneal thickness and diameters along with iridodonesis is commonly seen. It hampers the cosmetic appearance of the eye too. Displacement of the lens over time can lead to cataract. It increases the chances for developing glaucoma and retinal detachment.
Investigations:
The examination of the eye carried out by the ophthalmologist itself is suggestive of the condition, no specific investigations are required.
Treatment:
Surgical repair and surgery for the complications (cataract) is the only mode of treatment available.
