Ectropion

Ectropion is defined as outward turning of the eyelids, especially of the lower eyelids away from the eyes. High incidence is seen in old people.

Causes and risk factors

Ectropion is caused due to weakening of the muscles surrounding the eyelids. Advance age is the contributing factor for it. Weakness of the facial muscles can also lead to ectropion. Certain other causes of ectropion are injuries, infection, Bell’s palsy, stroke or any surgical procedure on the eye.

 

Clinical presentation:

Either one or both the eyes can be affected. The complaints can range from mild to severe one. The eyelid of the affected eye droops down. Dryness and soreness is seen. Irritation and redness of eyes along with excessive watering of eyes are the other associated symptoms seen. The person faces difficulty in closing the eyes as a result the cornea is not properly protected which in turn damages the retina. The cornea becomes dry. It becomes more susceptible to scarring and ulceration. In advance cases it can also hamper the vision.

 

Investigations:

Diagnosis is done of the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and the examination carried out by the ophthalmologist. Usually no investigations are required for ectropion.

 

Treatment:

Non surgical medical intervention comprises of use of adhesive tapes for holding the skin in place. Lubricating drops to relief the dryness are recommended. Surgical repair to restore the eyelid to the normal position can be done.
