Causes and risk factors
As the name suggest complaints are caused due to excessive straining or over use of eyes. Excessive straining of eyes during use of computer, reading, straining your eyes in dim lighting etc are certain contributing factors. Straining of eyes can also be caused due to certain underlying conditions like headaches or refractive errors.
Clinical presentation:
The patient can come up with complaints like pain in and around the eyes, watering of eyes, and fatigue. Headache, disturbed vision and sensitivity to light (photophobia) can also be seen. Some may experience of dry eyes. Difficulty in concentration and irritability can also be seen.
Investigations:
Diagnosis is done of the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and the examination carried out by the ophthalmologist. Usually no investigations are required for asthenopia.
Treatment:
Usually no medications are required in asthenopia. In cases if eyes strain is caused due to certain underlying factor, treatment of the underlying cause is essential. Overstraining of the eyes should be avoided. Where there is work on computers for prolong time, timely breaks should be taken. Blinking exercises and other exercises which will help to strengthen the vision should be done.
Other Modes of treatment:
Certain other modes of treatment can also be helpful in coping up the disease. Taking into consideration the symptoms in holistic way, homoeopathy can offer a good aid for the relief of the symptoms.
