Generalized Essential Telangiectasis

Generalized essential telangiectasis is defined as permanent dilation of small blood vessels due to unknown causes resulting in appearance of red marks on the skin and mucous membrane.  It is due to unexplained capillary dilation without any preexisting skin condition of systemic disease. Incidence is seen in women between the ages of 40-50 years.

Causes and risk factors

The exact cause of this condition is not known. However, certain studies have shown that emotional stress or exposure to sun seems to be the triggering factors. This condition is also seen as family traits in some people.

 

Clinical presentation:

The complaints are slow or fast to develop and they often spread very fast and spread all over the body. The common site of affection is trunk, arms, and lower extremity. In the lower extremity, particularly the feet and ankles are affected. The patient comes up with complaints of reddish pink discoloration of the skin. This discoloration appears like a mesh. Numerous telangiectases join to form diffuse patches. Temporary application of pressure causing blanching. However, no change in the dermis and epidermis is seen. Tingling and numbness are other complaints seen.

 

Investigations:

Diagnosis is done on the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and the physical examination carried out by the dermatologist. Absence of other skin conditions confirms the disease. Certain investigations like microbiological examination, biopsy and genetic analysis along with other tests can also be advised.

 

Treatment:

There is yet no effective treatment for this condition. Tanning lotions are advised. Vascular laser therapy has also shown to give good results.

 

Other modes of treatment:

Certain other modes of treatment can also be helpful in coping up with the disease. Taking into consideration the symptoms in a holistic way, homoeopathy can offer a good aid for the relief of the symptoms. The Ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbs and synthetic derivates can also be beneficial in combating the complaints.
