Causes and risk factors
This condition can occur due to traumatic causes. It can be a congenital deformity. Rheumatic cause like rheumatoid arthritis can also lead to hallux varus. It can be a sequel to corrective surgery done for hallux valgus.
Clinical presentation
Patient presents with pain in the affected toe. Instability while walking is experienced. There is difficulty in wearing shoes. Clawing of foot, decreased motion of the toe, deformity of the great toe is observed.
Investigation
Medical history by the patient and clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. CBC is done. X-ray of foot is recommended. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate [ESR] is required.
Treatment
Surgery can help and correct the position of the toe. Medications such as administration of analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs are done. Supportive care in the form of shoe modification, taping, splintage is given. Physiotherapy is needed post surgery which contributes further to the treatment.
