Causes and risk factors
Repeated activities which imply great force or overstretching or load on the muscles is the most common cause of straining of the hamstring muscle. Hence it is more commonly seen in athletes or in people involved in various sports activities like soccer and basket ball. Injury, fatigue and poor condition of the muscles can also add up to the hamstring injury.
Clinical presentation:
Sharp pulling pain in the back of the thighs is the common complaint with which the patient comes up with. Pain is severe pulling or tearing type. It causes difficulty in movement. In cases of an injury swelling at the back of the thigh or lower leg is seen Bluish green discoloration occurs. Weakness is another symptom seen.
Investigations:
Diagnosis is done of the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and the physical examination carried out by the orthopedic doctor. Investigations which are done are X-ray. Routine X-rays or specialized digital X-rays along with CT scan and MRI can be advised.
Treatment:
Treatment plan depends upon the severity of injury.Usually the complains like hamstring sprain or strain resolves on its own over a day or two. Rest and elevation of the affected area is the first step to be implemented. Compression using cold packs are effective. Analgesic, or non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs are advised by the orthopedic doctor. Knee Splint is recommended for immobilization. Surgery in severe cases like hamstring tear are.
