Heat Rash

Heat rashes also known as prickly heat is small tiny reddish bumps on skin occurring due to heat or during summers. It is also known as prickly heat or Millaria rubra. Although people of any age can suffer from heat rash ,high incidence is seen in babies. Although it can appear anywhere on the body it is more commonly seen on folds of skin or mostly at covered areas.

Causes and risk factors

Heat rashes as the name suggest are more commonly seen in hot and humid climates. However it can also occur in winter season. It is seen in babies in areas where there is tight clothing. Blockage and swelling of the sweat duct can also lead to heat rashes. High fever can also lead to development of this rash.

 

Clinical Presentation:

Usually heat rash do not pose any serious or severe complaints, On examination raised tiny bumps which are red in color are seen. They are multiple in numbers. It is more commonly seen on back, head, neck shoulder, and buttock or on chest. Folds or skin are also the more prone areas. The eruptions can cause itching and burning sensation. The patient complains of prickling or stinging sensation. Itching can aggravate the complaints. It can give way to secondary infection.

 

Investigations

The diagnosis is done on the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and physical examination carried out. No investigations are required for heat rash.

 

Treatment  

Usually no medical intervention is needed in case of heat rash. The symptoms subside on its own within 3-7 days. Certain measures need to be adopted. One should stay in cool place and wear loose clothes. In cases of severe rash topical soothing ointments or steroid ointments are prescribed. Simple moisturizers can also be helpful.

 

Other modes of treatment:

The other modes of treatment can also be effective in treating heat rash. Homoeopathy is a science which deals with individualization and considers a person in a holistic way. This science can be helpful in combating the symptoms. The Ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbs and synthetic derivates can also be beneficial in combating the complaints.
