Intertrigo

Intertrigo is a skin disorder characterized by formation of rash in the folds of moist skin. This rash is caused due to infection caused by fungus, yeast, or bacteria.

Causes and risk factors

This rash is caused due to infection caused by fungus, yeast or bacteria. Intertrigo is commonly seems to affect the skin which is moist, particularly the folds of the skin. This condition is commonly seen in people who are overweight and diabetic. Intertrigo is commonly associated with a variety of other skin conditions like psoriasis or atopic dermatitis or tinea infection and folliculitis. Splints and artificial limbs favor development of such a rash.  Intertrigo can be one of the features seen in Hailey- Hailey disease. Other factors like excess sweating, lack of circulation, poor hygiene, and frictional forces caused due to repetitive movements like cycle riding, running, etc., makes the skin more vulnerable for infection which triggers intertrigo. Environmental causes leading to high temperature and humidity equally may add to such triggers.

Clinical presentation:

The folds of skin are more commonly affected, particularly the armpits, groin, and the areas in between the toe. The area under the belly and breast region is also affected. Development of rash is a characteristic feature seen; this rash is brownish red in color. Soreness and raw sensation is felt in the affected area. Mild burning and irritation along with itching are also complained. In some cases, severe itching can lead to bleeding and crack formation along with foul odor discharges. 

Investigations:

Diagnosis is done on the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and the physical examination carried out by the dermatologist. Swab for microscopic examination are diagnostic.

Treatment:

In mild cases, no treatment is needed whereas in severe cases use of antibiotics and antifungal topical creams are advised. Steroid medications can also be applied. Keeping the affected skin dry and exposed to air is of foremost importance. Avoiding use of tight fitting shoes, wearing cotton clothes, taking regular shower, and completely drying oneself after exercises is advisable.

Other modes of treatment:

Certain other modes of treatment can also be helpful in coping up with the disease. Taking into consideration the symptoms in a holistic way, homoeopathy can offer a good aid for the relief of the symptoms. The Ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbs and synthetic derivatives can also be beneficial in combating the complaints.
