Causative & risk factors
The exact cause of Peyronie’s disease is not known. It can occur as a result of defective genes, trauma to the penis or both. Intake of certain medications may also lead to Peyronie’s disease.
Clinical presentation
An individual with Peyronie’s disease will experience a painful erection and a bend in the penis. In the non-erect state, there are no symptoms. Over time, the pain will go on reducing but the bend remains; thus making intercourse difficult.
Investigations
Examination of the penis is adequate to diagnose Peyronie’s disease. An ultra sonography or color Doppler of the penis can be performed.
Treatment
Mild cases of Peyronie’s disease do not need any treatment. The drug Xiaflex is used for treatment in moderate or severe cases; it works by breaking down the scar tissue. Painkillers are prescribed if necessary. Surgery for Peyronie’s disease may involve removal of the plaque followed by placement of a tissue patch, removal of the tissue from the side of the penis opposite the plaque or implantation of a penile prosthesis. Surgery is reserved only for severe cases where intercourse is not possible.
