Causes and risk factors
Pinched nerve result after compression of nerve in the body. E.g. it occurs as a result of herniated disc, compressing nerve roots in the spinal column, carpel tunnel syndrome, certain tumours. Conditions causing pinched nerve are injury, awkward incorrect posture, diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, sports, physical stress, and obesity.
Clinical presentation
Pinched nerve presents with symptoms such as numbness, tingling in the area supplied by the nerve. The area affected falls asleep [ formication]. Patient complains of sharp, aching, burning, pricking pain. Pain is radiating type [sciatica]. Patient may experience muscle weakness in affected part due to prolonged compression.
Investigation
Medical history by the patient and Clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. Nerve conduction study is recommended. Electromyography is advised. Imaging studies such as MRI scan is useful for further evaluation
Treatment
Treatment involves complete rest and immobilisation of the affected part with application of braces or splints. Medications like NSAIDs, analgesics are prescribed. Physiotherapy is required. Further treatment consists of surgical intervention if above treatment fails. Surgery depends upon the underlying cause.
Other Modes of treatment
The other modes of treatment can also be effective in treating pinched nerve. Homoeopathy is a science which deals with individualization considers a person in a holistic way. This science can be helpful in combating the symptoms. Similarly the ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbal medicines and synthetic derivates are also found to be effective in treating pinched nerve.
