Poikiloderma of Civatte

Poikiloderma of Civatte is a skin disorder characterized by reddish brown pigmentation, particularly at the sides of the neck. The incidence is more commonly seen in women. Particularly middle age women are affected. It is a reaction of the skin and not a disease. This condition is also known as sun aging. This condition was first described by a French dermatologist, Civatte, in 1923, hence the name.

Causes and risk factors

The exact cause is not known; however, certain factors seem to contribute to its causation. Long-term exposure to sun and aging is the main contributing factor for this condition. A genetic predisposition is also seen. As this condition is commonly seen in women, hormonal changes also are responsible for the same. This condition is also seen in people who are sensitive to chemical perfumes and cosmetics.

 

Clinical presentation:

Reddish brown pigmentary patches like being sun tanned, particularly affecting the skin of the sides of the neck, is a characteristic feature seen. Complaints are seen in symmetry. Along with skin of the sides of the neck, the cheeks can also be affected. Increased sensitivity of the affected area is seen.

 

Investigations:

Diagnosis is done on the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and the physical examination carried out by the dermatologist. Investigations like complete blood count, and antinuclear and anti-Ro antibody levels are also checked.

 

Treatment:

There is yet no effective treatment for this condition. Topical retinoid are prescribed. Tanning or sunscreen lotions are advised. Intense pulsed light therapy is also helpful. Use of fractional photothermolysis is another effective technique which is recommended.

 

Other modes of treatment:

Certain other modes of treatment can also be helpful in coping up with the disease. Taking into consideration the symptoms in a holistic way, homoeopathy can offer a good aid for the relief of the symptoms. The Ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbs and synthetic derivatives can also be beneficial in combating the complaints.
